Information Systems Librarian, Town of Falmouth Public Library

The Town of Falmouth Public Library has an opening for an experienced professional to support technology services at the main library and two branches. Examples of duties include installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of library computers, networks and peripherals; instruct patrons and staff on the use of technology, support telephone services, maintain library Web page; document all electronic activities, implement new releases, maintain software licenses, assists reference staff and patrons with technical problems, serves on-call for emergency situations. Position is full-time including one evening a week, every other Saturday and an occasional Sunday. Town benefits apply. Hourly rate is $19.30. MLS plus three years automated library experience installing and maintaining information technology infrastructure; excellent communication skills, knowledge of library operations and Microsoft applications. Library Technician, III, Scituate Town Library

Supervisor: Library Director
Department: Town Library
Job Level: A-6
Full Time: 35 hours per week
Union: TOSCA

Major Responsibilities: Serves as the assistant to the cataloger for 20 hours per week and as a circulation technician for 15 hours per week (approximate.)

Supervision Received: For techical service responsibilities, works under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director (Cataloger.) For circulation duties, works under the direct supervision of the Library Director and the full-time Library Technician.

Distinguishing Features: Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, the Library Technician III will order, process, catalog, mend, and weed library materials. While at the circulation desk, the Library Technician III handles all circulation functions.

The Library Technician III must:

  • Understand and carry out library operating policies and procedures .
  • Protect the confidentiality of all patron information.
  • Staff the circulation desk at scheduled times.
  • Work a varied schedule, including some nights and weekends.
  • Work well independently as well as a member of the team.

Examples of Work -Illustrative only:

•  Place electronic orders using established vendor Web sites while concurrently creating on-order records in the OCLN database.

•  Catalog materials on OCLN database.

•  Receive deliveries and verify packing lists.

•  Make library materials shelf-ready by applying dust jackets and creating and applying spine labels.

•  Maintain the collection by mending, weeding, shelf-reading, etc.

•  Assist other staff in ordering, processing, and managing the periodicals collection.

•  Circulation duties including, but not limited to check in, check out, patron registration, lost books, holds, etc.

•  Direct patrons to location or personnel appropriate for their needs.

•  Interpret and enforce library policies and procedures.

•  Handle patron complaints in a manner consistent with good public relations.

•  Respond to basic reference questions or reader advisory requests.

•  Provide simple bibliographic instruction.

•  Perform simple troubleshooting and diagnostics on PC’s, and other library equipment.

•  Shelve materials, replenish displays as needed.

•  Attend workshops, professional meetings, etc.

•  Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: Previous office experience required. Library experience preferred.

Required Skills:

  • Excellent computer and data entry skills including Microsoft Office, Web based applications, and specialized databases. SIRSI/DYNIX experience preferred.
  • Ability to learn new skills in a rapidly changing technical environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills including tact, courtesy, patience and flexibility.       

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work for prolonged periods of time at a computer while sitting as well as standing.
  • Must have transportation to attend meetings.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, lift heavy cartons, use hands & fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, and/or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk and hear. Must be able to move through the building quickly. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Salary:

Seven steps starting at $16.977/hr. Benefits include health insurance, vacation and sick leave as described in the union contract.
