Technical Services Librarian, (Requisition #0684) Bridgewater State College

 

Responsibilities:

As the head of the Library's Technical Services Unit, the Technical Services librarian provides leadership and guidance, supervises library assistants and student workers, manages unit work flows (cataloging, metadata application, database maintenance, and technical processing,) set priorities, develops policies and procedures with colleagues and staff, uses expertise and knowledge to ensure quality control and best practices, performs original cataloging and complex copy cataloging in all formats. Communicates effectively with other library units about policies, practices, and national trends effecting technical services processes. In conjunction with the Acquisitions/Collection Development librarian, recommends purchasing decisions for all types of research and classroom support materials. In conjunction with the Digital Services librarian, develops metadata standards and processes for applying schema and standards to an array of digital objects.

Qualifications:

Knowledge of cataloging standards, database management, and use of technology in a technical services library environment. Knowledge of cataloging operations for all formats, LC and Dewey classification schemes, authority and subject heading systems, and the use of bibliographic utilities. Personnel management and supervision experience. Strong problem-solving, analytical and organizational skills. Excellent interpersonal, communication, leadership, and team-building skills. Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities. Ability to think strategically and set priorities. Three years of professional technical services experience in an academic, large public or special library. Graduate degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications:

Undergraduate or graduate degree in social, life sciences or physical sciences.

General Statement of Duties:

Under the authority of the Library Board of Trustees, the Administrator of Public Library Services is responsible for the operation and administration of public library services in the City of Fall River.

Distinguishing Features of this Classification:

This is a responsible professional administrative position to carry out the policies of the Library Board of Trustees to provide public library service to the citizens of Fall River. Work is performed with considerable independence guided by the policies of the Library Board of Trustees and is reviewed through conferences, reports and an annual evaluation by the Board. Work involves planning, organizing, directing and implementing public library services and public relations activities; direction and supervision of the entire library staff; preparation and administration of the library's budget; operation and maintenance of library buildings and equipment.

Participation in Board meetings; prepares the agenda in concert with the Board Chairperson; supervises the recording, preparation and distribution of the minutes; prepares a written report for regularly scheduled Board meetings.

Acceptable Experience and Training:

The Administrator of Public Library Services must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and hold a graduate degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program. The position requires five (5) years of experience in library work, at least two (2) of which should have been on a responsible administrative level.

Assistant Library Director/Director of Development, Provincetown Public Library

 

The Town of Provincetown is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Library Director/Director of Development. This is a full-time, professional-level position requiring a Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution, six year of library experience at a supervisory level and three years of experience in fund-raising, grant writing or development.

Responsibilities include assisting the library director in planning, organization, supervision, development and administration of all library services, personnel, operations and programs and includes working in close coordination with the library director and Board of Library Trustees to plan and supervise the implementation of all adult library programming, publicity and fund raising activities in support of both of the library's annual campaign and in their efforts to address substantial capital needs and long-term debt.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strength in written communication and program planning, success in grant writing and external fund-raising, written and verbal communication skills, the ability to set priorities and work with frequent interruptions, strong interpersonal skills, organization, procedural and public relations proficiency, and an ability to develop and maintain a rapport with the public, as well as an ability to supervise and secure the cooperation of the staff.

Computer literacy, including but not limited to, creating Web content and using organization and online tools, word processing, graphics, spreadsheet, html, Internet, financial planning, report generation and database skills are also required.

Starting annual salary is $47,187 with comparable benefits package.

Bibliographic Services Supervisor, CLAMS

Full-time position with benefits, for Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing, Inc. (CLAMS, Inc.), a non-profit, automated resource-sharing network serving a consortium of 25 members at 35 libraries throughout Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.

Major Duties:

  • Coordinate the acquisition of MARC records from OCLC and the creation of original cataloging records for print, non-print, and emerging resources.
  • Maintain bibliographic and authority record parameters and assist with record loading programs.
  • Resolve discrepancies in bibliographic records, including complex copy cataloging, editing, and merging of MARC records.
  • Provide help and support via e-mail and by phone to member library staff primarily in the cataloging and serials aspects of the Millennium System.
  • Provide training to member library staff in cataloging and serials modules; may provide training in other relevant Millennium modules as needed. Prepare training materials for workshops, distribution to libraries and for staff Web page.
  • Install and test hardware and software needed for bibliographic services.
  • Supervise cataloging assistant and project cataloger.
  • Maintain statistics; write reports and documentation as needed.

Qualifications:   

Required: MLS degree; professional cataloging experience, including at least one year of original cataloging using a bibliographic utility – OCLC preferred; demonstrated knowledge and experience with AACR2-Rev, LCSH, LCRI, MARC formats, Web-based bibliographic tools and services; oral and written communication skills, supervisory experience, flexibility, and ability to work as part of a team in a changing environment.

Preferred: Familiarity and experience with Innovative Millennium, authority control, consortia systems, automated acquisitions and serials systems. Experience with Digital projects desirable.

 

Salary range starts at $42,000 plus benefits.
