Computer Lab Policies
Purpose of the Technology Lab
In response to members, the SouthEastern
Massachusetts Library System (SEMLS) designed
a technology lab as part of its office plans.
This facility exists to provide hands-on computer
and technology training to staff of member
libraries.
Specifications
The Lab contains 16 PC workstations, each
with Windows XP, Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft
FrontPage 2003, Microsoft Internet Explorer,
Mozillar Firefox, and Macromedia Studio. All
computers have Internet connection.
Other equipment includes a LCD projector,
pull down screen, marker board, 21" Television
and VCR.
Training
SEMLS staff, and/or other qualified teachers
hired by SEMLS, provide training to members.
Who May Reserve the Lab
First consideration is given to workshops
for members that are planned or coordinated
by SEMLS. Member libraries, automated networks
within the region, the Massachusetts Board
of Library Commissioners (MBLC) and library
associations, such as Massachusetts Library
Association (MLA), Massachusetts School Library
Media Association (MSLMA), Special Library
Association (SLA), etc., may schedule the
lab to conduct training sessions and demonstrations
for library staff. Other organizations or
vendors of interest to our members who wish
to conduct computer workshops for member library
staff may request use of the lab if the space
is available. The Regional Administrator or
designee has final approval of all outside
use of the computer lab.
Booking the Lab
Reservations must be made at least two weeks
but no more than three months in advance.
All requests should be directed to:
Catherine Cahoon, Administrative Assistant
- Phone: 877-923-3531; 508-923-3531 Email:
ccahoon@semls.org
Upon confirmation of an available date, the
applicant should fill out a reservation
form, which specifies the topic, date,
equipment, and other requirements. This form
must be completed and returned within one
week of the initial request for the reservation
to remain in effect.
Using the Lab
SEMLS encourages members and groups to use
the lab.
The computer lab is on a local area network.
Anyone who wishes or needs to install software
on the lab computers must consult with and
receive permission from the Assistant Regional
Administrator for Technology beforehand.
The lab is for all our members, so it is
not feasible for anyone to store data on the
lab computers. Anyone who needs to keep data
obtained from a workshop or demonstration
session may save it on a floppy disk or Flash
drive. |
