Professional
Development Points & Attendance Certificates
First, we will offer Professional Development
Point certificates to candidates who complete
a topical course of classes with a demonstration
of learning totaling ten hours of learning
activity. Candidates will collect Certificates
of Attendance as they complete classes within
a topic area. Once a candidate has completed
nine hours of class work, they submit the
certificates to SEMLS for an evaluation form.
When SEMLS staff has reviewed the evaluation,
the PDP Certificate will be issued.
The second certificate toward recertification
we will be offering will be a Certificate
of Attendance for the hours involved in any
one class. Educators can then use the Certificates
of Attendance toward PDP instruction time
requirements within their own school system.
Under this system, the school accumulates
the instruction hours, evaluates the candidate’s
learning and issues the PDP certificate once
requirements have been completed.
We hope, in this manner, we can continue
to assist librarians in member schools to
meet their Department of Education recertification
requirements.
Basic Library Techniques
Basic Library Techniques (BLT) is a group
of four special training courses designed
for public library directors in communities
whose population is under 10,000 and who do
not have a Master of Library Science degree.
The intent of the BLT program is to provide
practical training in Library Administration,
Reference, Cataloging, and Materials Selection.
The BLT requirement does not apply to library
personnel other than the director, but any
SEMLS library staff member may attend the
courses, space permitting. Staff may register
for BLT classes offered in any MA Regional
Library System. The BLT schedule is:
