SEMLS Workshops To Go were created to help. Book one now!

“Workshops To Go” are a series of trainings that SEMLS staff, our Reference and Interlibrary Loan providers have developed to take to you. Each workshop is 2 hours long and ready to go when and where you need it.

Customer Service

Adapting FISH! to Library Service This workshop adapts the ideas from the professional development book and movie FISH! -- based on the world famous Seattle Fish Market.

Improving the Library Experience An introduction to the ideas in The Experience Economy and provides a new way to look at the experiences our users have in our library.

Introduction to Customer Service This workshop gives the staff an opportunity to talk about what makes good customer service.

Reference and Reference Databases

Basic Reference for Non-Reference Staff: Basic reference skills will be covered including useful resources.

GOOGLE PLUS Learn about restricting searches in all things Google and how to use it for ready reference.

Reference Interview: Learn the basics of the reference interview and brush up your customer service skills.

Review of SEMLS and Statewide Databases Learn about the electronic databases offered to all member libraries by SEMLS and the MBLC.

Searching eLibrary eLibrary is a great resource for accessing news articles, finding multimedia resources and pulling together librarian-selected resources.

Searching InfoTrac Take an in-depth look into the statewide InfoTrac collection.

Searching SEMLS Newspaper Databases An overview of the 3 databases offering extensive newspaper coverage – Newsbank, ProQuest & eLibrary.

Searching the Web: the Basics Do you have trouble finding information online? Learn tips for improving your online searching skills.

We Can Get That for You! – The Ins and Outs of Interlibrary Loan

Weeding

Weed It With this introduction to weeding, gain the confidence and inspiration needed to weed your collection.
Focused workshops on School Library Collections, Adult, Children, Reference and Young Adult collections.

Computer Technology

Basic troubleshooting This workshop will give non-technical staff the tools to do some basic troubleshooting when computer and printer problems occur.
Clip, Paste & Print to Go If you’re familiar with Microsoft Word but need more tips in creating flyers faster and easier, this two-hour tutorial will help.

Focus on Microsoft Office Basics, such as Windows and Word.

Quick & Dirty Brochures with Publisher. With step-by-step instruction, we will show you how to use the ready-made templates to simplify the process.

“To-Go” workshops are designed so that several people can provide the same workshop. We hope that this will give us the flexibility to be there when you need us.

Send your request via email to ce@semls.org or call Cheryl Letendre and she will arrange the time for you. Your library needs to meet just a few criteria for this service (see procedures).

 

 

Procedures for booking a Workshop To Go

• Have 5 people who will attend the workshop. Do you work in a single person library? We encourage our smaller libraries to partner with neighbors.
• Give SEMLS at least 1 month lead time.
• Provide a room that is away from public spaces if the library is open during the workshop time.
• Use a space that has a surface that we can use to project on.
• Provide computers for each workshop participant for hands-on training. Hands-on workshops are limited to 10 participants.
• Have Internet access in the workshop space for those classes that require it.
